Human Rights and Justice Adviser
I'm Monjurul Kabir, an international human rights lawyer by training, and I'm leading our work on the rule of law, human rights, justice, and legal empowerment in the region.
My main areas of expertise:
- Policy analysis, review and advocacy
- Project design, management and implementation
- Strengthening and drafting legislation
- Human rights based approach to development
Together with my team, I'm supporting UNDP Country Offices and national and regional partners in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to ensure that the rule of law, human rights, access to justice, social inclusion, and legal empowerment are integrated into national policies, legislation and institutions.
I believe in the benefits of addressing human rights challenges through multiple perspectives and with a diverse range of partners.
I have over 15 years of experience designing policies and projects to promote democratic governance, parliamentary development, knowledge management, human rights and increase access to justice globally and regionally (including in Afghanistan Bangladesh Southern Africa).
Some recent achievements
2012 Launched and implemented univeral period review facility to promote implementation of agreed upon rights human recommendations
2011 Promoted access to justice and legal empowerment, leading to a regional project and new intiatives in the region, including Central Asia
2010 Integrated protection of minorities, rights of persons with disabilities, and gender equality in the regional priorities on human rights and justice in the Europe and the CIS
2009 As part of the core group responsible for drafting United Nations Secretary-General’s Guidance Note on Democracy (pdf), represented UNDP throughout drafting and policy deliberations; played key role in articulating UNDP’s position in the United Nations Secretary-General’s 2009 report on new and restored democracy (pdf).
