A job and a future for young people

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s contracting economy has posed problems for many people, but especially for youth. Nearly 60 percent of young people are unemployed and many consider leaving the country to look for jobs.

“The choice I had for the last two years was to sit and be without a job, or to work illegally,” says Aleksandar, aged 28. “I started to look for a job in another country. I really had no hope that anything would change.”




Preventing floods in Ljubinje

LJUBINJE, Bosnia and Herzegovina - 13 June, 2012 - Flooding in the town of Ljubinje town is no longer a problem for more than 300 households, thanks to joint efforts of Ljubinje Municipality and the United Nations. People were illegally dumping their garbarge in the drainage ditch, which was prevented once the ditch was cleaned and covered over.

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina - 18 November 2010 - Fourteen years after the signing of the Dayton Agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina has, in many ways, made impressive progress - prior to the global financial crisis, gross domestic product (GDP) was growing steadily and unemployment was declining, and while the financial crisis in 2009 was certainly felt in the country, it was not as severe as some had expected. Eight steps forward: Cleaning up environmental hotspots in the Western Balkans

Bosnia and Herzegovina Takes on Climate Change

Handling Environmental Hotspots in Western Balkans; Meeting Stresses Cooperation

Podgorica, Montenegro, November 2009More than a decade after armed conflicts, six countries/territories in the Western Balkans are now working together to tackle regional environmental hotspots. Representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and the UN-administered territory under SCR 1244  Kosovo, recently met in Budva to assess their progress in the Western Balkans Environmental Hotspots Programme. 'Include the Excluded,' UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina Recognized for Excellence

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, October 2009-A report strongly advocating for inclusion of marginalized groups as a key part Bosnia and Herzegovina’s long-term social policy has been awarded an award for innovation from the United Nations Development Programme. The report, the 2007 Bosnia and Herzegovina National Human Development Report (NHDR) – Social Inclusion in BiH, was recognized for its innovation in measuring human development. The publication was a joint effort of UNDP and national experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina led by the Independent Bureau for Humanitarian Issues and the Team Leader Dr. Žarko Papić.

Performance-based municipal budgeting in Bosnia and Herzegovina: towards European integration

April 2009 - Good budgeting serves a number of governance functions. These include linking expenditures with the purposes for which they will be used (results orientation) and the revenues from which they are financed, providing a control mechanism to ensure that each government layer lives within its means, improving credit ratings to increase borrowing capacity (either via loans or the issuance of bonds), and providing citizens with the information they need to hold the state accountable.




Bosnia and Herzegovina Battles Silent Threat

The landmines are a legacy of the country’s conflicts in the 1990s — a legacy that continues to inflict damage.




Bosnia and Herzegovina Targets Surplus Ammunition

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina,  February 2009-Authorities destroyed surplus rocket propellant in Vitezit this month, as part of an ongoing effort to rid Bosnia and Herzegovina of increasingly hazardous ammunition. The country has a roughly 25,000 tons of surplus ammunition, a legacy of its conflicts in the 1990s. Dismantling all the explosives is one the country’s biggest security priorities.
