European Development Days 2007

The European Development Days enhance public awareness on development cooperation and contribute to increased effectiveness of EU development assistance in the context of the Millennium Development Goals. Through the event European citizens engage in a stronger partnership with developing countries.

The first edition of the European Development Days was held in Brussels in 2006. Lisbon will host 2007 edition in 7-9 November 2007. The issue of climate change and its influence on poverty reduction will be a major topic of this year's event.

"In 2007, against the background of raising worldwide concerns and debates, the European Development Days will, once again, render evident the urgent need to address the challenges posed by climate change to our development cooperation strategies and activities worldwide. In Lisbon, we aim to intensify the convergence of visions and to strengthen our much needed partnerships, which are pivotal to our success in the global response to climate change. Thus, policy debates will, in part, focus on the successful implementation of both mitigation and adaptation measures." - say Louis Michel, European Commissioner for development and humanitarian assistance and Joao Gomes Cravinho, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal welcoming participants of the European Development Days.
