Belarus: A new approach to managing resources

MINSK, Belarus – 24 April, 2012 – Massive peat extraction in Belarus destroyed natural habitats and left land prone to fires that spewed carbon emissions into the air. By supporting efforts to restore peat lands, UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have helped Belarus combat environmental degradation and move towards mitigating climate change.

Moldova: Vulnerable young people and women make a fresh start 

CHISINAU, Moldova – 10 April – Integrated, easy to access support services help women and young people who survive abuse, domestic violence or human trafficking. To model how this could be done, UNDP sponsored legal aid, social care and financial services, along with job training to open doors to employment. 

Turkey: moving towards climate-friendly development

ISTANBUL, Turkey – 28 March, 2012 – Ten years ago, only a dozen Turkish Government officials worked on climate change issues. Today, over 300 officials work in the field, and national policies exist to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This transformation is part of broad efforts by UNDP to increase awareness of climate change issues in Turkey and help build national capacities for mitigation and adaptation.
