Four More Years of Cooperation in Croatia
Current rating:
Zagreb, Croatia, January 2009–The United Nations Development Programme and the Croatian government agreed to four more years of cooperation in a Jan. 16 signing ceremony. The agreement will continue mutual anti-violence programmes in the country. Signing a memorandum of understanding, the UNDP and Croatia’s Ministry of Interior agreed to focus on social inclusion, community safety and peace programs. Social inclusion programmes will advocate for greater societal roles for women and the disabled. Community safety programmes will target armed violence and family violence. The peace programmes will focus on establishing peace and trust in war affected areas. The agreement is the latest UNDP and Ministry of Interior effort to combat violence in Croatia. The anti-violence initiative is in response to rising armed violence in the country over the last several years, sparked by the wide-availability of firearms. In December 2008, the UNDP and the Ministry of Interior also launched a program to fund 40 public safety and development projects in counties across Croatia. The programme, known as “Destruction for Development,” includes:
Other UNDP and Ministry of Interior programmes in 2007 and 2008 collected arms and explosives, established municipal centers with information on new weapons laws and regulations, and funded public safety and infrastructure projects. In 2009, three such projects are scheduled for completion: a youth center in Sibenik town, exercise facilities for firemen in Bjelovar town and a football playground in Gracac.
