UNDP regional director visits Moldova
Moldova, 28 March 2008 — Kori Udovički, the United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Regional Director for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), visited Moldova on 26-28 March. The visit took place on the occasion of UNDP’s 15th anniversary in Moldova.
Ms. Udovički met Marian Lupu, Speaker of the Parliament, Zinaida Greceanii, First Deputy Prime Minister and Igor Dodon, Minister of Economy and Trade, as well as representatives of international organizations and civil society in Moldova. At the meetings with Moldovan officials, Ms. Udovički discussed Moldova’s development priorities and what assistance the United Nations, and UNDP in particular, can offer to meet its development goals. Special attention was devoted to Moldova’s progress towards the Millennium Development Goals; the UN response to last summer’s drought; and support for monitoring the National Development Strategy.
Apart from this, Ms. Udovički participated in the inauguration of the Maternal Center in Causeni that has been set up by the UNDP project “Better Opportunities for Youth and Women” with financial support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
UNDP has been assisting the Moldovan government since 1993 with projects that address every aspect of people’s lives. They work for strengthening governance structures and accelerating sustainable human development by supporting activities to reduce poverty, develop civil society and the private sector, promote gender equality and increase access to information.
Finally, together with other UN Agencies and donors, UNDP is helping Moldova overcome the consequences of the drought that hit the country last summer by providing aid to the most vulnerable people.
