Chropov, Slovak Republic, September 2009—In a small village 97 km from Bratislava, United Nations Development Programme staff members and their families took part in a tree planting, deepening the roots between the UNDP and the Slovak Republic. A part of UNDP’s Green Office Initiative, the event also contributed to improving the environment, compensating for and reducing UNDP Bratislava Regional Center’s carbon footprint and building team spirit. "The UNDP’s tree planting morning is a symbolic gesture to emphasize that in a modern economy you also have to give back to nature,“ Jens Wandel, UNDP Deputy Regional Director and Bratislava Regional Centre Director, said on a sunny, windy morning.

Wandel, his UNDP colleagues and their children, 27 individuals in all, worked together to plant and place the saplings. Many of the planters traveled together by bus to the site near the town of Skalica in western Slovakia. It is UNDP BRC’s third annual tree planting. More than 150 indgineous pine trees were planted at a site selected by the State Forest Office. The trees were planted in a young forest, filling in gaps were young saplings have not survived.

The work required both manual labor and nurturing. Armed with gloves, sturdy shoes, hoes, shovels and a good attitude, UNDP staffers spent the morning clearing ground and moving soil to prepare the ground for the saplings. "Heavy soil and heavy shovel,“ said one young tree planter while steadily at work. Said another planter while patting soil, "Talk to it, talk to it, have to be nice [to the tree] so it will grow next year."
