Kapuscinski Lectures - 20 October, Lithuania, University of Vilnius - lecturer: Eveline Herfkens, UN Millennium Campaign

University of Vilnius hosted on 20 October 2009 the lecture of Eveline Herfkens, founder of the UN Millennium Campaign. The event is part of the "Kapuscinski Lectures" initiative of the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme. Experts from around the world will deliver lectures on development and development cooperation at universities in 12 new European Union countries. The series “Kapuscinski Lectures”, and named for Ryszard Kapuscinski, a Polish reporter and writer who covered developing countries.

UN Millennium Campaign
Founder

In October 2002, then UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, appointed Eveline Herfkens as his Executive Coordinator for the MDGs with the mandate to set up and lead the Millennium Campaign. After six years in this role, Ms. Herfkens as Founder of the UN Millennium Campaign currently continues to promote the MDGs globally and in Europe for the Campaign as Special Advisor to the UNDP Administrator; she also serves as member of: the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization (Geneva Switzerland); The Governing Board of the International Center for Trade and Sustainable Development (Geneva, Switzerland); The Governing Board of the African Centre for Economic Transformation (Accra, Ghana); The Governing Board of the International Partnership for Microbicides (Washington D.C., USA).

Between 1998-2002 Ms. Herfkens was the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation. In this capacity, she co-founded the Utstein Group consisting of the Ministers for Development Cooperation of Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway and the Netherlands, which received in 2003 the first annual Commitment to Development Award by the Center for Global Development in Washington D.C.

From 1996 to 1998, Ms. Herfkens served as Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands, in Geneva. In this capacity she served in a number of positions, such as Chair of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Subcommittee on Least Development Countries, establishing the Integrated Framework for Trade Related Assistance. Before she represented the Netherlands and a number of other countries at the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank Group and was a Member of the Parliament.
