Emergency relief funds of $100,000 for flood crisis in Romania

Bucharest, Romania, 23 May 2005 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) has allocated $100,000 for emergency activities in response to the flood crisis in Romania. This amount will be used to procure motorized boats, life jackets and other equipment necessary for coordinating relief work.

New York, 19 May 2005 – Deeply concerned by the recent violence and loss of life in Uzbekistan’s eastern city of Andijan, the top United Nations human rights official is urging that an independent investigation be conducted to look into the causes and circumstances of the incidents.

Gender issues attract growing number of civil servants in Russia

Moscow, 19 May 2005 - In 2003, Russia introduced a new course on gender issues for civil servants at the State Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Russian Federation. The course provides everything from a theoretical basis in gender concepts to more practical lessons on how to reflect the different needs of women and men in decision-making and government budgets. By now almost 200 government officials have taken the course, Galina Kalinaeva, Gender Advisor in the Russia office of UNDP, said yesterday at a meeting between UNDP and national partners to review the project's results.

United Nations reports on the refugee influx in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, 18 May 2005 - Soon after the events in eastern Uzbekistan unfolded, the United Nations Agencies in Bishkek were informed of a possible refugee influx into Kyrgyzstan, and the United Nations Country Team established a crisis management team on 14 May to prepare a response. UNHCR was designated as the lead agency and a Working Group was also set up to monitor the situation and coordinate support activities. The Working Group is composed of UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, and chaired by UNHCR.

Governments and civil society work for gender equality in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 17 May 2005 - A newly established national Gender Agency in Bosnia-Herzegovina was officially inaugurated on 5 May. At the opening ceremony, UNDP and the Government of Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), presented the new two-year sub-regional joint initiative for Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro.

UN Refugee Agency calls on Uzbek and Kyrgyz Governments to keep border open

New York, 17 May 2005 - After a weekend of deadly violence, and with ongoing tension in the Uzbek city of Andijan and the region around it, the United Nations refugee agency today called on the Governments of both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to leave open their common boarder to panicked civilians fleeing for safety.
