Youth taking Turkey by storm

Turkey, 9 May 2008 – UNDP’s National Human Development Report 2008 – Youth in Turkey – has caused quite a stir: six weeks after its launch it is still in the news, and top of the political agenda. Yesterday, more than forty youth NGOs issued a press release offering their contribution to implementing the recommendations, and the parliament’s youth and education commission has requested a detailed presentation of the findings from UNDP. The lead author Aygen Aytaç explained how it came about and where we go from here. 



Partnerships and progress in living with HIV

Russia/CIS, 3-5 May 2008 – The “Besedka” Community Dialogue Space opened its doors to participants and guests of the Second Eastern Europe and Central Asia AIDS Conference (EECAAC). The Besedka was a forum for frank discussion of the questions that most concern people living with HIV, representatives of HIV-services organizations, governments, international organizations, experts and journalists.



Demography and development in Russia

Russia, 28 April 2008 – The demographic problem remains one of the most severe challenges in modern Russia: the ongoing population decline and shrinking workforce caused by low fertility, high mortality, ageing, a reduction in the working share of the population, and so far indistinct migration policy pose risks for the future of the country. The United Nations in the Russian Federation and the Center of Strategic Research present the UN in Russia joint publication Demographic Policy in Russia: from Reflection to Action, prepared by a group of independent national experts.



UN Action Plan Prepared for Chernobyl Decade

New York, 25 April 2008 — At a high-level meeting of UN agencies convened to mark the 22nd anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident on 26 April 1986, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presented a draft “action plan” covering UN work on Chernobyl until 2016. Preparation of the plan was mandated by a 2007 General Assembly resolution, which proclaimed 2006-2016 the Decade of Recovery and Sustainable Development of areas affected by Chernobyl. The aim of the Decade is to promote a “return to normal life” for the region. After review by the International Atomic Energy Agency, UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and other agencies involved in recovery efforts, the UN action plan will be approved later this year.



Carbon trading in the CIS

Kazakhstan/Russia, 25 April 2008 – In Astana today and in Moscow on 28-29 April, further steps are being taken to encourage carbon trading as a way of meeting goals for the reduction of greenhouse gases. Organized by UNDP and several partners, these events will further develop carbon regulation schemes and trading markets in the region and give an opportunity for those involved in their operation to discuss problems and future developments.



Democracy and the media

Georgia, 22 April 2008 – The recent political situation in Georgia has been characterized by tension and unrest. The media have played a key role, including through the intervention of both government and opposition. In the first half of April, before parliamentary elections in May, UNDP hosted a series of seminars for journalists to help enhance their knowledge of the electoral process in a climate of free and fair reporting.  Around 40 journalists from national and regional newspapers, radio and television took part in a series of intensive sessions to share the reporting skills and principles that have made Reuters one world’s premier news companies.



Global economy, local effects: poverty in Ukraine

Ukraine, 17 April 2008 — Many experts say that the excellent progress the whole East European region has made in reducing poverty in the last ten years is now being threatened by growing uncertainties in the global economy. At an international conference organised by UNDP, government executives from Eastern Europe, business leaders, international experts, think-tanks and NGOs shared their experiences of poverty alleviation and social inclusion through multilateral partnerships. The Conference’s participants called for an immediate response to resist further increases in poverty in Ukraine.



Counselling key in fighting HIV

Turkmenistan, 14 April 2008 – Last week saw a three-day training of trainers on helpline services, organized by UNDP and the National AIDS Center within the HIV Prevention project. Eighteen medical specialists received certificates for their participation in the training, in which they learned techniques of telephone counselling . Making helpline services more user-friendly and professional will give the population – and vulnerable groups in particular – better access to quality information and services related to HIV and other STIs.



Poverty alleviation cannot ignore environmental concerns

Slovakia, 14 April 2008 – Measures to reduce poverty must encompass the sustainable land management practices needed to underpin long-term economic growth, says the April issue of Development and Transition, which is being released today at www.developmentandtransition.net.



Justice for all

Serbia, 8 April 2008 – The second phase of the Legal Aid Fund, promising access to justice for some of the most vulnerable people in Serbia, began yesterday with contracts signed between UNDP Serbia, the Serbian Ministry of Justice and the partner organizations providing legal aid. Following a highly successful first phase of the project from August 2007, the project is now financed until December 2008.
