UNDP Ukraine Activity Report 2005-2007In the last two years, UNDP worked closely with the leadership of Ukraine at the central, regional and local level to advance democracy, promote economic growth and improve the living standards of Ukrainians. Guided by the Millennium Declaration and human rights-based approach to programming, UNDP made efforts to empower people to address current challenges, starting with village communities, schools and local government offices, all the way up to the central level institutions of the state.
Business Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility, Georgia, October 2007TBILISI. 23 October 2007 – Head of the United Nations in Georgia Robert Watkins and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Vice Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Baramidze at the specially convened Business Forum discussed best practices and prospects of Corporate Social Responsibility in Georgia. The Business Forum is part of this year’s United Nations Week in Georgia. Annual UN Week is to celebrate the United Nations Day on 24 October and provide an update on the UN’s work in the country.

NHDR 2007 launched in PolandWarsaw, September 19, 2007. Today UNDP Poland launched together with the Chancellery of the President of Poland our 2007 NHDR "Education for labour" (report coordinated by Janusz Czamarski). The event gathered over 100 specialists dealing with education and labour market, including those from private sector. It was also attended by parliamentarians and ministers - including education and regional development at the level of ministers and other on vice-ministerial levels.

Involving the diaspora for sustainable and integrated community developmentUNDP in Armenia has been working closely with Armenian diaspora organizations to improve livelihoods in several rural communities throughout the country. Tapping this invaluable resource UNDP has brought together three important organizations to utilize the skills of each and thus supporting the development of those in need in Armenia. Through its Community Development Project UNDP has partnered with the Children of Armenia Fund, a diaspora established NGO, and USAID bringing together their respective skills and expertise to renovate primary and secondary schools and invigorate the local economy in Karakert village of Armenia.

Meet Zharas Takenov, an international senior programme officer focusing on environmental issues in UNDP Kyrgyzstan. Zharas was born into a family of teachers in Kazakhstan, just north of the Aral Sea. In his childhood he saw the Aral Sea - alive and full of power, and later on he participated in projects related to the Sea and people of the region. "Still so much work must be done, says Zharas. It is a pity that my generation has become an eyewitness of loss and, so far, to an ineffective struggle for rehabilitation of this great Sea. This is a good reminder – “People be vigilant!”.
