Tackling Rising HIV Levels in Russia, Central Asia

Moscow, Russia, 5 November 2009-Eastern Europe and Central Asia continue to experience rising rates of HIV, particularly in Russian and Ukraine —home to 90 percent of cases. In Central Asia and the Caucauses, the number of newly reported HIV cases is also rising rapidly. Overall, the region experienced a more than 100 percent increase in people living with the virus between 2001 and 2007, with drug abuse a prevelant cause of illness through use of dirty needles.

Bosnia & Herzegovina, 16 June 2008 – UNDP today launched the second phase of its HIV/AIDS national marketing campaign. This activity aims to reduce public stigma toward HIV-positive status and toward people in groups at ‘high-risk’ of contracting HIV, as well as encouraging safe behavior among young people, including awareness of their status through testing.

This campaign is part of the programme “Coordinated National Response to HIV/AIDS & Tuberculosis in a War-torn and Highly Stigmatized Settings”, funded by a grant to Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM). The UNDP Country Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Principal Recipient of this grant and implementer of the programme.



Creative methods of drug prevention in Belarus

Belarus, 20 May 2008 – Experts representing educational institutions of the Mogilev region (Belarus) learned advanced methods of prevention of drug abuse among young people during a workshop “Interactive Methods and Drama Art in the System of Drug Prevention” conducted under the “Programme for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and the Fight against Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova” (BUMAD) funded by the European Commission and implemented by UNDP.




Counselling key in fighting HIV

Turkmenistan, 14 April 2008 – Last week saw a three-day training of trainers on helpline services, organized by UNDP and the National AIDS Center within the HIV Prevention project. Eighteen medical specialists received certificates for their participation in the training, in which they learned techniques of telephone counselling . Making helpline services more user-friendly and professional will give the population – and vulnerable groups in particular – better access to quality information and services related to HIV and other STIs.

UNDP conducts educational training on human rights and HIV in Western Ukraine

Ukraine is leading in Europe and is the third country in Eurasia, after Cambodia and Thailand, according to new HIV cases level. The Ukrainian society is striving to find an effective response to this challenge. The international community and the UN, in particular, have come to an undeniable conclusion that there existed direct relation between human rights standards and HIV. Practical realization of the human rights is a solid background for an efficient resistance to HIV, as many experts agree. 
 





Preventing HIV/AIDS among sex workers in Belarus

The number of sexually transmitted HIV infections is rising in Belarus. UNDP is redoubling efforts to help prevent HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections with a new project to educate and assist commercial sex workers plying their trade on Belarusian highways.
