National Forum Looks to Empower Rural WOMEN.

Ashbagat, Turkeminstan, 27 February 2009: A highly successful programme for rural women in Turkmenistan that centered on increasing self-employment opportunities for rural women in Dashoguz and Maryshould concluded in wrap-up conference. Participants of the Forum agreed that project should be replicated throughout the country.

More than 60 rural women, selected from a pool of 400 applicants, received training in business development and operations. With a broader goal of improving rural women’s family role, social status and income, activities included training in finance, cases studies, marketing and sales. Additionally, small grants were available to fund new businesses, which included carpet making, flower growing and ceramics.“
 
"The project demonstrated that there are a lot of opportunities for rural women and self-employment in Turkmenistan.” UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Inita Paulovica, emphasised.

Ongoing  projects to support gender equality and women's empowerment

 
Support to Gender Mainstreaming in Policy Making in Turkmenistan
 
The aim of the project being implemented throughout 2004-2009 period, is to support capacity development of rural women to be engaged into income generating activities and to strengthen capacity for gender mainstreaming among policy and decision makers and NGOs.
 
The first component of project aims at creating self-employment opportunities for rural poor women. Unemployed or underemployed women from low income families were selected, trained and guided in income generation activities. Based on potential self employment opportunities small grant programme was implemented, used as seed money for procurement basic tools and materials to start up income generation activities. The second component focuses on supporting the process of monitoring the implementation of the CEDAW and National Action Plan as well as expanding awareness on CEDAW and gender equality, enhancing advocacy and problem solving skills and formulating project proposals in response to women’s needs identifying in the women’s needs assessment.
