The Women’s Safety and Security Initiative (WSSI) project aims to improve the security environment for women in Kosovo by undertaking comprehensive efforts to combat violence against women and trafficking in human beings (especially women and girls). WSSI aims to empower public institutions and civil society in Kosovo in order to: - Increase public awareness of violence against women and trafficking;
- Decrease women’s general insecurity and improve the assistance provided to victims of violence against women.
WSSI works in close partnership with the Office for Public Safety, Office of Good Governance, and the Agency for Gender Equality (at the Prime Minister’s Office), the Trafficking in Human Beings Sector at the Kosovo Police Service, as well as a number of partners in civil society (Kosovo Women’s Network, etc.). Outputs and activities: 1. Strengthened capacity of civil society to monitor and advocate for the accountability of public institutions in combating VAW - Organizing roundtable with all relevant actors to develop common strategies to combat VAW and design an awareness campaign based on the results of the roundtable;
- Issuing guidelines and providing trainings for journalists in gender equality to raise awareness of their responsibility in promoting non-stereotypical images of women and men and in informing and educating people about the causes and effects of VAW;
- Training the Municipal Gender Officers in all municipalities in lobbying, advocating, raising funds and better liaising with the other actors on the municipal level to improve the coordination.
- Conduct research on forms of violence on women and existing institutional and other responses (eg: protection etc.)
2. Increased capacity of public institutions to combat VAW - Training the Trafficking in Human Beings Investigations Section (THBS) of KPS in victim-sensitive approaches and undercover operations to improve their investigation skills and providing them with adequate equipment (interview rooms, a vehicle and wireless walkie-talkies);
- Set up interview rooms in THBS in five regions for victims of VAW and THBS.
- Training judges, prosecutors and lawyers in order to increase their knowledge of the problem and their attention towards the effective implementation of existing legislation;
- Ensure long-term post-shelter assistance for victims of THB by establishing a Rehabilitation Centre;
- Contributing to increasing the capacity of four safe houses for multi-ethnic victims of domestic violence covering four regions: Gjilan/Gnjilane, Prizren, Gjakovë/Dakovica and Pejë/Pec; and providing them with training focused on how to deal with very difficult cases.
