DESCRIPTION: As in many other countries, in Serbia the unemployment rate of women is higher compared to men. Furthermore, the labour market in Serbia is characterized by horizontal occupational segregation, and employed women are often paid less than men. In order to contribute to informed decision-making and policy debate, this project aimed to establish baseline information regarding women’s vulnerabilities and opportunities in the labour market in Serbia. Based on both existing information and research, policy recommendations have been created in order to influence policy makers through an advocacy action focused on improving the position of women in the labour market in Serbia. Better understanding of different positions of women and men in employment and focused attention on women’s involvement in the labour market in the Republic of Serbia is relevant for poverty alleviation as well as the country’s economic development. MAIN ACTIVITIES: The study has been conducted in three phases, applying an interdisciplinary approach and combining different methods. Sociological, legal and economic analyses have been conducted, using official statistical data of state institutions, as well as focus groups interviews in five different towns with women, with the intention to gather information about their experiences in relation to gender based discrimination in the labor market. On the basis of the study and during discussions with many interested actors in a consultative process a set of recommendations for state institutions have been formed. |
