Training workshop on Mainstreaming Gender into RBEC’s Climate Change Programming.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance the impact of UNDP’s work on climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts in the ECIS region through strengthening the incorporation of gender concerns within climate change programming as well as ensuring greater participation of women in climate change initiatives. For this goal, the workshop intends to enhance the capacity of Country Offices in identifying and responding to linkages between gender and climate change agendas. Community of Practice building, involving environment & energy practitioners and gender practitioners, will also be part of the workshop. Additionally, the workshop is expected to enhance the institutional capacity of UNDP Country Offices to address and facilitate integration of gender concerns in climate change initiatives through the use of knowledge management tools.

Training on Gender Mainstreaming into Democratic Governance

The aim of Training is to equip Democratic Governance team staff, Gender Focal Points in COs and their partners in the Government with the concepts, tools and skills necessary to design and facilitate gender mainstreaming. For the UNDP COs staff this would mean incorporating gender perspective into the Programming in Democratic Governance Practice at the country office level. For the Government partners this is necessary in addressing gender equality issues in the policy-making processes, implementations of existing laws, and improvement of existing mechanisms with regard to women, governance and leadership.

Alternative reporting: a door to equality

Uzbekistan, 19 August 2008 – Representatives of women’s NGOs from all regions of Uzbekistan were familiarized with the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other issues on women’s rights protection at a UNDP-backed workshop. During the workshop, participants listened to presentations, engaged in practical tasks and discussions to determine the role of NGOs in CEDAW implementation and monitoring as well as in the preparation of alternative reports. In addition, an international expert came from Turkey to present participants with the Turkish experience on CEDAW implementation, on national and alternative reports preparation and submission.

Macedonia, 28 May 2008 – In the run-up to the Early Parliamentary Elections in Macedonia on 1 June, UNDP continues its efforts to deepen democracy. On 26 May, a panel discussion was held to raise awareness among political parties, civil society bodies, the media and the broader public on the need to prevent family voting – a widespread practice and a fundamental violation of electoral rights.

Women's committees and empowerment in Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan, 22 May 2008 – UNDP last week conducted a training course for members of regional women’s committees from across Uzbekistan. The course was focused on the use of CEDAW to address gender gaps and discrimination and is the latest UNDP activity in the country to strengthen the mechanisms for women’s participation and work toward gender equality.

- Present how the Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit can be used in UNDP project work;
- Provide useful information on the Gender Mainstreaming (GM) methodology for project development and implementation;
- Get an overview of projects that use the GM methodology;
- Collect information for an imminent regional gender assessment;
- Discuss what tools to mainstream gender can be developed by Bratislava – GM checklist for pre-PAC process, expert rosters, data bases, access to disaggregated data, etc.
