New Members Share EU Transition Experiences at Conference
Current rating:
Bratislava, Slovak Republic, June 2009–New European Union member states shared their experiences with that transition at a two-day international conference opening today in Bratislava. Hosted by the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs and co-organized by the United Nations Development Programme’s Bratislava Regional Centre for Europe and the CIS, representatives from the new EU states, including the Czech Republic and Hungary, shared lessons learned with Balkan countries and the former Soviet Republics, the Commonwealth of Independent States. One theme of the conference was the relationship between donors and the countries that receive development assistance, primarily in the area of substantial reforms. Other topics included economic transition, political transition and environmental transition. The sessions are part of a broader goal of helping countries better integrate with the EU. Closer alignment to the EU in transitional countries has also been broadly consistent with socio-economic progress and democratic consolidation. As a part of that process, countries that recently joined the EU are also seen as in the best position to help newcomers. Some of those new EU members, such as Slovakia, have become major development success stories, with economic and social development much higher than it was in the early 1990s. By transferring expertise within and beyond the region, these countries can help their neighbors and the global community. At the same time they also help achieve the Millenium Development Goals—benchmarks for reducing poverty by 2015— and strengthen development cooperation. To help make that happen, the UNDP’s Bratislava Regional Centre launched the Emerging Donor Initiative in 2003 with three goals:
Participants the conference included Belorussia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Sweden and 12 new EU member states. UNDP is the United Nation's global network, focused on helping countries build and share solutions to the challenges of globalization and human development. Since 1997 the UNDP's Bratislava Regional Centre for Europe and the CIS serves 31 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The program portfolio includes the areas of environment and energy, social inclusion of marginalized people, local development and national capacity building for official development assistance. In Slovakia, the Bratislava Regional Centre also operates an office in Kosice city. ![]() For information on the conference visit, www.slovakaid.sk |
