DESCRIPTION:
This was a two-year project funded by CIDA. The focus of the project was on sub-regional cooperation of Gender Equality Mechanisms, including (but not limited to) Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia. Strong emphasis was on building capacity of gender equality mechanisms at all levels and support for partnerships between CSOs (primarily women’s groups and CSOs focused on gender equality issues) and Gender Equality Mechanisms at all levels.

GENDER RELATED ACTIVITIES:
In Serbia, this project provided a key support to the Gender Equality Council (GEC) of the Government of Republic of Serbia. Due to increased visibility, GEC obtained for the first time funding from the state budget in 2006. In addition, GEC developed its strategic plan for 2006 and managed to engage in a complex participatory process of drafting of the National Action Plan for Women (NAP) (based at the Beijing Platform for Action), which was supported by UNIFEM and finalized at the end of 2006. The NAP is pending adoption of the Government of Republic of Serbia.
One of the activities of the sub-regional Gender Equality Project was focused on reporting against the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence against Women (CEDAW). A regional conference has been organized in Belgrade on 28 March, offering opportunity for the regional exchange of information / knowledge related to CEDAW reporting. In addition, a publication on CEDAW reporting has been printed and presented at the conference, in partnership with the Institute for Gender Equality of the Vojvodina Province. Timing of this activity was excellent, as Serbia defended its Initial report on implementation of CEDAW in June 2007.
