UNDP Support to Implementation of 8 Point Agenda in the Western Balkan Region

The proposed regional project will be located in the Western Balkans sub-region (that will include territories of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro) that experienced strong peace building activism, particularly vibrant in the immediate post-crisis period but has since faded, with a consequent decline in real democratic interaction in the sub-region. However, there are lots of linkages and entry points developed through recent UNDP work in the region that created positive trend to leverage and build upon the experiences of governmental gender mechanisms, cross-boundary women’s rights and human’s rights organizations as well as peace-movements. UNDP is best positioned to establish a broader shared platform for real political change in the sub-region building partnerships to maximize impact on gender priorities.

The aim of the regional project proposal

The sub-regional project will mainstream both gender equality and crisis prevention and recovery considerations. As such it is intended to implement the RBEC Gender Equality Strategy 2008-2011 in the context of the Framework for Cooperation between BCPR and RBEC 2008-2009. The substance of the project is guided by the UNDP Eight-Point Agenda for Gender Equality in Crisis Prevention (8PA), with holistic approach though Point Three “Expand Women’s Citizenship, Partnership and Leadership”, that would provide support to women’s representation in the social, political, and economic spheres; develop women’s networks and institutions for conflict prevention, specific interventions that would build women’s skills and confidence; disaster risk reduction, peace-building and post-conflict/post-disaster reconstruction. The project will also build around Point Four “Build Peace with and for Women” and Point Seven “Transform Government to Deliver for Women”.
