The overall objective of the full project, implemented by UNEP and UNDP, was to rapidly phase-out all non-exempted uses of methyl bromide (MB) in five CEIT countries (Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland) and provide support to two countries (Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan). The elimination of about 167 metric tonnes MB used annually enabled these countries to comply with the Montreal Protocol requirement to phase-out MB imports in 2005, excluding quarantine and other exempted uses. The project addressed the key barriers that have prevented the adoption of MB alternatives by providing training for MB users, resources to assist the procurement and installation of alternatives, and policy development and capacity building.  The project transferred and installed existing MB alternatives. It also has built capacity and carried out pilots for the development of more environmentally sustainable alternatives for the longer term.

UNDP  implemented the investment component of the project. UNEP implemented the non-investment component (ie. training, policy development, etc.).  UNDP’s investment activities included the specification and procurement of appropriate equipment and materials, and provision of expert assistance for their installation. UNDP and UNEP cooperated closely in implementing this project, because the investment and non-investment activities were strongly linked and needed to be organised and carried out in parallel.

Short description The overall objective of the project, is to rapidly phase-out all non-exempted uses of methyl bromide.
