Clean development for Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is taking steps to participate in the growing carbon finance market and promote more sustainable development, with UNDP's support.

UNDP hosted a series of workshops at the beginning of April aimed at assisting Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to develop projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) introduced by the Kyoto Protocol to fight global climate change.

The Kyoto Protocol offers the potential for industrialized countries to supplement domestic emissions reductions by reducing GHG emissions of developing countries through the CDM. This gives developing countries the opportunity to leverage their ability to lower their own emissions cheaply, and attract investment for sustainable, environmentally friendly development.

Kyrgyz ministry officials and members of parliament attended a high-level seminar, where they learned about the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol and got a comprehensive overview of the carbon market – the main players, the ins and outs of trading, and potential projects in the country.

Following the seminar the participants agreed on the next steps to establish a Designated National Authority, required to supervise implementation of CDM projects in the country.

The seminar was followed by a technical workshop for practitioners on carbon finance and methane capture and utilization.
