It is the challenge to develop a successful tourism sector based on Albania's unique cultural and natural assets. As such UNDP assist the Albanian Government in two main areas: creating an enabling environment for tourism-driven development, assistance to local tourism development. UNDP supports the Ministry of tourism in strengthening its capacity to meet the challenges of modern tourism, and provide direct support in critical areas where the Ministry lacks human and other resources including: conducting a study tour on policy and product development, national tour guide training and certification programme, calibration of tour providers to international tourism standards, support for the design and implementation of a national tourism quality programme, and improvement of Albania's market position, image, and presence. Regional Tourism based on UNESCO World Heritage sites is promoted, as well as the restoration of architectural and cultural monuments in key tourism destination cities like Berat and Gjirokastra.
