The risk of disaster loss is on the rise globally with grave social and economic consequences for the lives of ordinary people and survival of affected communities. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has suffered severe damages to the country’s economy due to natural disasters in the recent years. BiH is lacking any kind of a short or long term strategy that would clearly define the priorities and steps to be taken in upgrading the country’s capacities to plan, assess, prevent or mitigate the effects produced by natural or other types of disasters. Therefore, the BiH authorities recently started an initiative of developing a national legal framework for disaster management, in line with the conclusions of Hyogo Framework for Action 2005 – 2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disaster (Hyogo Framework).
