“With the Copenhagen Seal the Deal climate talks coming up [in December], we are focusing on climate change,” Mr. Wandel said. “We are focusing on climate change in our region, Europe and the CIS, and helping our country offices with their response and what we ought to do." In her remarks, Ms. Štrofová noted the role of Slovak Jan Papánek as an initial UN representative of the then Czecho-Slovakia. A native of Brezova in western Slovakia, Papánek served as a UN delegate until 1948. After the Communist takeover of Czecho-Slovakia, Papánek then devoted his efforts to helping Czecho-Slovak refugees. His early UN work has since come full circle, with Slovakia moving from Communism to independence to receiving UN aid to now helping other emerging nations as a UN donor and advisor. “Jan Papánek helped lay the foundation for today’s UN,” Ms. Štrofová said. “It is also symbolic that his birthday, October 24, also celebrates UN Day.” Ms. Štrofová added that the Slovak Republic looks to build on his legacy wiith continued close cooperation with the UN and its allies. “Slovakia backs multilateralism as a way to achieve peace and prosperity and there is still a lot to be done,” she said. Mr. Wandel concurred. "We have done a lot of work already, with 22 country offices in the region, but there still is more to be done.” In place since 1948, United Nations Day, 24 October, has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the United Nations. ![]() ![]() |
