Montenegro and Albania team up to save lake
Current rating:
Montenegro recently hosted the first international meeting to discuss sustainable development of Lake Scadar, the biggest freshwater lake in the Balkans. Lake Scadar lies between Montenegro and Albania and is an important bird sanctuary, with sites of cultural and historical interest dotting its shore. The mid-October meetings in Vranjina and Shkodra were organized by UNDP in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in Europe (ROSTE) and brought together the Prime Ministers of Montenegro and Albania Milo Djukanovic and Sali Berisha. Both countries' environment ministers were also in attendance, along with local officials and representatives from business, civil society and international organizations. Mr. Djukanovic underscored the need for cooperation to "define goals and dynamics for the protection of the Lake Scadar ecosystem, starting with protecting the lake from pollution, but also considering its historical and architectural heritageā. The conference took place within the framework of the regional Dinaric Arc Initiative of UNDP, UNESCO-ROSTE, WWF, IUCN, and Council of Europe.
