Slovak Republic To Help Western Balkans

Bratislava, Slovak Republic, June 2009 –Slovakia’s success with public finance reform will now serve as a resource for countries that need help in that sector. Ján Počiatek, Slovak Finance Minister and Jens Wandel, Deputy Regional Director and Regional Centre Director of the United Nations Development Programme’s Bratislava Regional Centre for Europe and the CIS and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the Slovak Republic to work together on helping other countries with public finance. Such experiences in managing public finances are crucial in the fight against corruption, poverty reduction and ensuring the effective expenditure of public finance sources. Reform of the management of public finance is widely accepted as one of the most successful areas of the economic transition in Slovakia. At the same time, there is a need to solve the deficiencies in public financing in the regions of the Western Balkans and the former Soviet republics, the Commonwealth of Independent States. As a result, the cooperation will include the programme, Public Finance for Development: Strengthening Public Finance Capacities in the Western Balkans and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Along with the Memorandum of Understanding, Minister Počiatek also signed an Agreement on Financial Contribution for this programme, as well as the relevant programme document. This programme will be implemented by the UNDP's Bratislava Regional Centre. The Slovak Ministry of Finance will participate in the programme during the implementation phase, by providing its know-how and by contributing to program effectiveness. The total budget of 36-month program is $1. 05 million (USD). UN

Since 1997 the UNDP's Bratislava Regional Centre for Europe and the CIS serves 31 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The program portfolio includes the areas of environment and energy, social inclusion of marginalized people, local development and national capacity building for official development assistance. In Slovakia, the Bratislava Regional Centre also operates an office in Kosice city. |
