Building Bridges Across the Green Line: A guide to intercultural communication in Cyprus

In this guide, Benjamin Broome, a Professor at Arizona State University, explores the dynamics of intercultural communication in unofficial contacts between Greek and Turkish Cypriots across the Green Line in Cyprus. The guide provides an overview of efforts over the past three decades to promote cooperation across the buffer zone, with an examination of the obstacles confronted by those involved in the projects. Drawing on his experience with conducting bi-communal workshops over the past decade, the author makes practical suggestions for establishing trust, engaging in dialogue, and for cooperation. Finally, the guide discusses the social and psychological impact of cross-community contact and its importance in preparing for life after a settlement.
