Martina Zaccaro UNDP Partnership for the Future, Cyprus

To mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we accompanied Fatma Terlik, health and safety focal point for the UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme in Cyprus, as she toured various on-going construction sites.

With more than 55 civil works contracts awarded in the past five years – ranging from 10,000 to 25 million euros each – and approximately 800 workers employed – health and safety quickly became a priority issue for UNDP in Cyprus. Fatma’s site inspections are all-encompassing, as she inspects personal protection equipment, scaffolding, emergency situation plans, first aid, manual handling and tools to make sure they meet standards.

Here’s a quick round-up of  fellowship and training opportunities we came across recently which we thought might be of interest to our readers:

It is not “Equal Pay for Equal Work” for women – in the workplace, and on the football ground

Koh Miyaoi

As a Japanese national, I was keen to join the celebrations for the victory of our women’s football team at the FIFA World Cup in Frankfurt until the festive mood quickly turned into the disappointing realization of yet another example of gender pay gap.  There is no difference between the rules for men’s football games and the rules for women’s football games.  And yet, the women who won the World Cup received ¥1.5 million each from the Japan Football  Association for their first place finish whereas the men who didn’t reach the quarter finals in last year’s World Cup in South Africa received at least ¥10 million each. If that’s not discrimination, what is – I wonder.

Women in wheel chairs monitor accessibility in Tashkent

Monitoring accessibility in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Mid-April. Four young people: Saodat, Nargiz, Shahlo and Maruf – who use wheel chairs and crutches – decide to monitor the accessibility of their city, their own way.  They took a path that ran from a restaurant in the centre of the city to a famous cinema using a public bus.  It was a struggle: no ramps and a lot of barriers. When they finally arrived to the cinema, guards nearby had to help them to get over the 20 step stairs to the hall so that they could finally enjoy their film. Unfortunately, nothing new for them. This time, though, they had pen and paper and a camera in their hands.

Lyra Jakuleviciene

I led the UNDP office in Lithuania for the last four years – I was 32 back then. This is the highest UN position that you can get as a national staff. And it all started from an internship, when I was given an opportunity to serve as a first Baltic trainee in the regional UNHCR office. Having come back to my country, I worked for the UN since 1997. The internship gave me not only work and life experience in a foreign country, but also lots of self-confidence.
